US Approves Additional Military Aid to Israel Amid Tensions

In a move that has drawn international attention, the United States has recently approved the provision of substantial military aid to Israel. This decision comes despite the ongoing concerns expressed by Washington regarding a potential Israeli military operation in Rafah.

The approved military aid includes an impressive array of weaponry, featuring over 1,800 MK84 2,000-pound bombs and 500 MK82 500-pound bombs. This package is part of the $3.8 billion annual military assistance that the US provides to Israel, a long-standing ally.

This decision has been met with significant international criticism, particularly in light of Israel’s ongoing bombing campaign and ground offensive in Gaza. Within the US, some members of President Biden’s party have called for a reduction in US military aid to Israel.

Despite the criticism, the US has continued to expedite the delivery of air defenses and munitions to Israel. This unwavering support has been criticized by some Democrats and Arab American groups, who argue that it gives Israel a sense of impunity.

President Biden, acknowledging the distress felt by many Arab Americans over the conflict in Gaza and US support for Israel, has nonetheless pledged ongoing support for Israel. This comes despite a growing public disagreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The decision to provide additional weapons was made following a visit to Washington by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. During his visit, Gallant emphasized the importance of US-Israeli relations to Israel’s security and the maintenance of Israel’s “qualitative military edge” in the region.
